AD2020-18-01 Wing Strut Attach Point

October 20, 2020

The FAA has issued AD2020-18-01 to address the report of cracks found in the lower area of the forward cabin doorpost bulkhead. The FAA is issuing this AD to detect and address cracking of the wing strut attach point. The unsafe condition, if not addressed, could result in failure of the wing in operation, which could result in loss of control of the airplane. This AD is effective 12 Nov 20 and it applies to 140 CAP aircraft. These are our older 172 and 182 aircraft.

To comply with this AD we must inspect each affected aircraft within 200hrs or the next 12 months, whichever comes first.  The inspection normally takes about 1.5 hours but in conjunction with the Annual/100hr it will probably take less time.  If cracks are found in this area a service kit must be installed prior to further flight.  This inspection must be repeated every 36 calendar months or 1,000 hours TIS even with the service kit installed.  Please notify NHQ/LGM if cracks are found on any aircraft as soon as possible so that we can get parts on order and decide the best course of action for this repair.  Please have the shop that completes the inspection comply with the reporting requirements as required in the AD.  This must be completed every time this inspection is performed.

NHQ/LGM is creating a discrepancy in AMRAD for each affected aircraft to have this AD completed at the next Annual/100hr inspection.
