How to find the age of a tire.

INFO:

Tires are a very important safety consideration when it comes to operating COVs. It is better to understand what to look for when it comes to tire checks and inspections. CAP’s minimum requirement is to visually inspect the tire’s condition per day used, physically inspect the tire’s pounds per square inch (PSI) monthly, and replace tire’s when needed, according to manufacturer’s recommendation, or at least every six years.

There is so much more to know about tires that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) have created TireWise, a webpage solely dedicated to knowledge about vehicle tires. STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE:

Finding the tire age for the CAPF 132:

1. Look at the sidewall of the tire. You are looking for the Tire Identification Number (TIN). The TIN will start with the letters "DOT" followed by letters and numbers.

2. Next find the last four digits in the series of numbers and letters that follow "DOT". The first two digits indicate the week the tire was made, and the last two digits indicate the year the tire was made.

3. Lastly, you will enter this number in the “TIRE AGES:” section of the CAPF 132. LF is for the left front tire, which is from the point of view of the driver (RF = right front, LR = left rear, RR = right rear).

Examples:

If the last four digits of the TIN are "2118", the tire was made on the 21st week of 2018.

If the last four digits of the TIN are "3815", the tire was made on the 38th week of 2015.
