Data coming in from the successful landing Thursday of Mars 2020 Perseverance rover showed everything appeared to be "working as expected," according to NASA. In addition, a high-resolution image, part of a video taken by several cameras, was captured by a camera aboard the descent stage. The rover will characterize the planet's geology and past climate and search for signs of ancient life.

In the coming days, engineers will study the rover's system data and begin to test its instruments. After that, Perseverance will test its robotic arm and take a short drive. In at least one or two months, the rover will find a flat location to drop off Ingenuity, the mini-helicopter attached to the rover.
