Self

Single Pilot Resource Management (SPRM)

While CAP often conducts missions with a full crew, many flights are completed by single pilots. Even without an onboard aircrew, single pilots must effectively manage both internal and external resources to ensure safe flight operations. Effective SPRM requires a structured approach, personal discipline, and self-awareness. Pilots must be able to assess and utilize available resources, from aircraft systems to external communications, while maintaining situational awareness.

For additional guidance, refer to the FAA Single-Pilot Crew Resource Management webpage for additional information.

The IMSAFE Checklist

The IMSAFE checklist is a vital tool used by pilots to assess their personal fitness for flight. It serves as a quick, mnemonic self-assessment that helps identify physical or mental factors that may affect a pilot’s ability to safely operate an aircraft. The IMSAFE mnemonic stands for:

  • Illness

  • Medication

  • Stress

  • Alcohol

  • Fatigue

  • Emotion or Eating

CAP’s preflight risk assessment includes elements of the IMSAFE checklist, but performing a full self-assessment with this checklist provides an added layer of safety, ensuring pilots are fully fit to fly.

Medications and Flying

When considering medications, it’s not just about what you're taking but also the underlying condition being treated. Some medications and conditions can significantly impact a pilot's performance, potentially compromising flight safety. Always review whether a medication, even if over-the-counter (OTC), is safe to use before flying.

For further information, consult the FAA’s Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications website or the CAP briefing on Medications and Flying for specific guidance on managing medication use and flight readiness.
